About Freshwater Foods
Freshwater Foods’ mission is to develop and market-exciting lines of retail
and wholesale food products containing as many Midwest ingredients as
possible for people that love cooking and need products which will enhance their
culinary experiences.
Like most young entrepreneurs Chris and Cathy Szabo had visions of someday
having their own business specializing in retail-wholesale gourmet foods.
Chris and Cathy both have the experience and knowledge of food preparation
and the exposure to the Midwest and Northern Michigan’s style of cooking;
it’s traditions and recipes. Chris was born and raised in Michigan,
attended Eastern Michigan University, and has worked for fifteen years in
the restaurant-hospitality industry with ten years on Mackinac Island both
as employee manger, and currently partner-owner-operator of a prosperous
restaurant-catering enterprise on the Island. Cathy was born and raised on
Cape Cod, attended University of Massachusetts at Amherst, comes from a
family with a strong retail background along with twenty years restaurant-hospitality
experience, the last six years have been on Mackinac
Island. Cathy and Chris proceeded to work on making their dream come true
and in 2002 with the encouragement and involvement of Chris’ parents their
dream came true with the founding of the family owned and operated C&C
Cooking. Also, in that same year Mackinac Country Cooking, a retail gourmet
food service shop was created and opened its doors on Mackinac Island. The
shop is managed and operated by Cathy. The shareholders of C&C cooking have
collectively over fifty years of food service experience.
C&C Cooking has established itself with Mackinac Country Cooking a retail
gourmet food service shop on Mackinac Island. Part of its success is in the
direct response to the products that contained Midwestern ingredients and
that are produced in Michigan. From that experience, Freshwater Foods was
born in the winter of 2002.This homemade line of Midwestern inspired
products has enjoyed an overwhelming response. In a short period of time
C&C Cooking and its subsidiaries have made their mark on the island and
created a small wholesale business as well. The response to ice cream
desert toppings, salsas, sauces and chutneys on the island has been
excellent. In the fall of 2003 a prime location in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula town
of St. Ignace, became
available and it was decided to relocate Freshwater Foods.
Freshwater Foods is St. Ignace’s first and only gourmet food processing
facility. Chris and Cathy, and Chris' parents, along with the
cooking staff all participate in product research and development.
Until the opening of the St. Ignace facility, Freshwater Foods was limited
to selling products in the Straits of Mackinac area. With our expanded
operation Freshwater Foods is marketing their products to the Midwest, the
great lake states and even across the country. The plan was to start with a
small line of products using the freshest ingredients and develop more
exciting product lines as the venture and demand grows.
